I was born 33 years ago on 14th July 1981. Initially, I was just a normal healthy baby. Then, when I was one year old, my health took a turn for the worse. I got sick and looked very pale. After a medical check up, I was diagnosed as Thalasssaemia HBE Intermediate.
Since then, I have to go for regular blood transfusions in the hospital. When I was seven years old, I had to undergo a splenectomy per the doctors advice. After splenectomy, the frequency of my blood transfusions reduced. When I was 18 years old, the doctor told me that my hemoglobin was very low, and I had to have more regular blood transfusions to maintain my hemoglobin level. However, regular blood transfusions could cause iron overload in our bodies. To remove excess iron from my body, I have to use a special drug called ‘desferal’. At first, I feared that the use of ‘desferal’ would interfere with my daily routine. Instead, it turned out that the use of the drug never limited me, and I can still do all my daily activities as usual.
Although I never completed my studies, it doesn’t mean that I do not know anything. Knowledge is very subjective and you can gain it from anywhere. I like to read and from my readings I still can improve my knowledge. When I was a kid, I kept asking myself “What is Thalassaemia and why do I have to face all of this?” Now I know more about thalassaemia and know that there are others who are living with the same medical condition as me. Therefore, I am very much encouraged and I am very grateful that I can survive and have a chance in life like everyone else.
I’m still not working but every festive season I do some business and take order for baking cakes. Although I own only a small business, at least I can gain some benefits and experience.
Lastly, for all thalassaemia patients and parents, never ever give up and hold on to your dreams. I believe that all our dreams can come true if we have the courage and put in the effort to pursue them.
